A water balloon full of mercury hitting the ground (X)

Mercury is a liquid, and it behaves almost exactly as water would in the situation. The main difference is that, since mercury is more dense (more mass per unit volume), it conserves its momentum a little better than water would. (Momentum is equal to mass times velocity). So you could see the same pancaking with water, the balloon would just need to be moving faster.
Basically, what’s happening is that the mercury in the balloon is moving at a certain speed when it hits the tupperware. Every individual atom of mercury wants to keep moving at that speed…so when suddenly they can’t keep going in the same direction, they somewhat knock into each other until they find a path that allows them to conserve that momentum…just as water dropped from a glass would splash all over. 
But it can’t splash all over because it’s bound by the balloon, which stretches out, capturing the momentum of the mercury with its elasticity.
The balloon doesn’t break simply because it isn’t very full and doesn’t experience enough stress to tear the rubber. 
Check out this slow-mo video of a dude being slammed in the face by a water balloon that doesn’t break…it’s behaves in a very similar way. And also is TOTALLY AWESOME.
